When I wrote this song I was working with adult patients in an outpatient detox unit.  Throughout my entire nursing career I had always loved my patients and received much gratification from caring for them. But I couldn't stand  the majority of these extremely manipulative patients. They were the worst. They were using the system and everyone in it for their own selfish benefit. Now granted, that was part of their illness as I understand it, but I found myself so angry everyday when I left work. I was totally frustrated and felt like I was just spinning my wheels and not doing anyone, any good. I remember destinctly feeling like I must be a really "bad person" to feel this way about my patients. This song was written on New Year's Day as a prayer to a Power greater than myself to please help me to be a better human being. Not too long after that, I found a new job.
